AI Server: Query

EEAll clusters

With the Query tools the assistant treats a Proxmox VE cluster as a database. You ask a question in plain language. The assistant turns it into a query (filter, group, count, sum, sort, take the first rows) and gets a table back.

The other tools of AI Server answer one fixed question each: list the guests, show a configuration, read the tasks. With Query a question needs no dedicated tool.

The tools only read: a query never changes anything on the cluster. You never write a query: the assistant does. Every call it makes is recorded in the audit log.

  • Nodes: status, uptime, CPU and memory usage
  • Virtual machines and containers: status, node, pool, tags, CPU, memory, disk and network usage
  • Configuration of virtual machines and of containers
  • Storages: type, content, space used and available
  • Storage content: backups, disk images, ISO images, templates
  • Snapshots of the guests
  • Replication jobs and their state

The input is your question. The output is a table, one row per result, that the assistant reads and reports to you.

The values in the outputs below are only an illustration.

Input: “How many guests does each node run?”

Output: the first tab is how an assistant typically shows the result. The other tabs are the same table as cv4pve-admin returns it, in each of the four formats of the Output Format setting.

NodeName Total
pve01 12
pve02 9

JsonCompact is the default. JsonNormal is indented here to make it readable: cv4pve-admin sends it on one line, without spaces. The format changes only how much text travels to the assistant, not the content of the table.

Input: “Count how many VMs are running”

Output:

Total
14

Input: “Which five guests use the most CPU?”

Output:

Id Name NodeName
104 db-prod pve01
110 web-01 pve02
121 mail pve01
107 build-agent pve02
133 monitoring pve01

Input: “Which backups are not verified?”

Output:

GuestId StorageName FileName
104 pbs-main vm/104/2026-10-05T01:00:02Z
121 pbs-main vm/121/2026-10-05T01:12:40Z

When a question cannot be answered, the assistant receives an error instead of a table:

  • Permission denied when its token lacks the permission on that cluster
  • Cluster '<name>' not found
  • A message that says what is wrong in the query

Each of the two tools, GetQuerySchema and ExecuteQuery, has its own permission, checked on the cluster named in the call. Both permissions are in the AI Server Tools role of the Enterprise Edition: see Application permissions.
