Concepts
A few ideas come back on every page of this documentation, shown as badges next to titles and features. This page explains them once.
Cluster scope
Section titled “Cluster scope”cv4pve-admin manages several Proxmox VE clusters from one interface. Each module works in one of two ways, and its page says which with a badge next to the title.
| Badge | The module works on | In the navigation menu | Data and settings |
|---|---|---|---|
| Per cluster | The cluster selected in the cluster picker | Only when a cluster is selected | Separate for each cluster |
| All clusters | No single cluster | Always | One for the whole application |
The cluster picker
Section titled “The cluster picker”The picker in the header is where the scope becomes visible. How to use it is in the User Guide.
- With a cluster selected, the navigation menu lists the per-cluster modules next to the all-clusters ones, and every per-cluster page shows that cluster.
- With no cluster selected, as on the Dashboard right after login, the menu lists only the all-clusters modules.
Per cluster
Section titled “Per cluster”Most modules are per cluster: AutoSnap, Backup Analytics, Diagnostics, Resources and the others each work on one cluster at a time.
- To open one, choose a cluster in the picker at the top. The menu then lists the per-cluster modules, and the page shows the data of that cluster.
- Choosing another cluster reloads the same module on the new cluster.
- The settings of a per-cluster module are saved for each cluster. Enabling AutoSnap or changing a Diagnostics threshold on one cluster does not change the others. See module settings.
All clusters
Section titled “All clusters”A few modules are not tied to a cluster and are always available:
- Dashboard: a widget can show one cluster or several.
- AI Server: one MCP server for every cluster.
- Portal EE: each tenant is bound to its own cluster.
- Admin Area and User Profile, reached from the profile menu.
Their settings are saved once, for the whole application.
Both badges
Section titled “Both badges”The Command Palette carries both badges, because part of it depends on the cluster and part does not:
| In the palette | Scope |
|---|---|
Going to a module, the logout command |
All clusters always there |
Finding a VM or a node (vm:, node:, ip:), the commands start, stop, restart, console, create snapshot |
Per cluster only with a cluster selected, and only on that cluster |
The same reading applies wherever a page shows the two badges on single rows of a table: each row says when that item is available.
Edition badges
Section titled “Edition badges”cv4pve-admin comes in two editions. Everything in Community Edition is also in Enterprise Edition.
| Badge | Meaning |
|---|---|
| EE | Available only in Enterprise Edition. Next to a page title it marks a whole module or page; next to a feature, a setting or a table row, only that item. |
| CE | Marks what Community Edition offers, where a page compares the two. |
The full comparison, module by module, is in Community vs Enterprise.
SSH badge
Section titled “SSH badge”cv4pve-admin talks to Proxmox VE through its REST API. A few features also need a shell on the nodes, and are marked SSH: node configuration backup, update scans and snapshot size calculation EE.
SSH access is configured for each cluster, in Proxmox VE Clusters. Without it those features are skipped and the rest keeps working.
